Fall brings so many wonderful things along with it. Gorgeous fall foliage (have you checked out the color at the Overland Park Arboretum? It’s incredible) crisp but not too cold weather that is perfect for sunlit strolls, amazing fall fruits and vegetables and of course, these days, pumpkin spice EVERYTHING. Fall also however usually signals the beginning of cold and flu season, and, let’s be honest here, that part is not so much fun.
The chances are good that you have heard all the standard advice for helping to ward off cold and flus; eat lots of fruits and vegetables, take some extra vitamin C and/or zinc, get plenty of exercise balanced with plenty of rest and of course, frequent hand-washing. And yet it seems like every year you still have to suffer through at least a few days trying to drag yourself around while dealing with the miseries of a cold or a bout of flu.
If you want to be a little more proactive about cold and flu prevention this year, there is one more thing you can do; book an appointment with a chiropractor. Sounds a bit weird? It’s not, and we’re going to take a few moments to explain why.
The Lymphatic Flow Connection
The lymphatic system is your body’s own natural drainage system, and when it’s working as it should it is very good at ridding your body of bacteria and viruses, by flushing them away in a fluid called lymph that is comprised of lots of germ fighting immune cells.
In fact, if you head to a doctor to be seen for a cold or the flu one of the first things they will check are your lymph nodes, usually by feeling along your neck under the jawline. What they are checking for is what we usually refer to as ‘swollen glands’, but are actually enlarged lymph nodes that are fighting hard to ward off an attack by cold or flu germs.
The way the lymphatic system is designed to work is that all of the yucky germs will be drained out of your body via the lymph nodes. Some of those nodes are located in the neck and along the spine. If your neck and spine are out of alignment due to muscle tension, stress, injury or other musculoskeletal condition, your ducts can easily become blocked or congested and that nasty cold will take hold.
How a Chiropractor Can Help You Ward Off a Cold
A simple, gentle chiropractic adjustment will help realign your neck and spine and get that cleansing lymph fluid flowing again, allowing your body to better protect itself against sniffles, snuffles, coughs and more. Combine this gentle treatment with all of that standard advice we mentioned before and this year maybe you’ll get to enjoy more of the delights that fall, and the winter that follows have to offer instead of having to stay in bed (or on the sofa) surrounded by tissues and feeling sorry for yourself because you’ve been sidelined by a cold.
