Spring is a wonderful season. The warmth of the sun, the longer days, the return of flowers, shrubs and that odd green stuff in your backyard you haven’t seen for a while (aka grass), it’s all wonderful stuff. For some. For others, though, spring isn’t so much fun, as it’s the season that brings with it the return of their spring allergies. And it’s hard to enjoy the spring when your nose is running, your throat is scratchy or you are sneezing your head off.
Every year around 50 million Americans try to soldier on through a season of allergic reactions to the springtime pollens, molds, grasses and weeds that are suddenly popping up all around them. And unfortunately, per the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, as the weather changes as a result of climate change the number of seasonal allergy sufferers is increasing annually.
To try to combat seasonal allergies, many sufferers head straight to their local drug store to pick up one of the many OTC medications that might help them. However, the relief is temporary, if it’s effective at all, and some of the side effects can be just as bad as the allergies themselves. There are better ways to find seasonal allergy relief though, here are four of the most effective.
Yes, the way you eat can help improve your allergies. Some foods have natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve those inflamed nasal passages and sore throats you’re dreading. Adding more leafy greens and brightly colored berries to your diet really can help, and the lighter warm weather salads you can make with them are better for your overall health as well.
Change Your Hygiene Habits
Many of us prefer a bracing morning shower but for allergy sufferers an evening cleanse is a better idea. After a day out in the world your clothes, hair and body are covered in pollen and allergens that cause your misery, even if you can’t see them. If you go to bed like that it’ll all rub off on your sheets and pillows, you’ll be breathing it all in and making things worse. So, wash your clothes after every wear, take a shower before bed and wash all your bed clothes at least once a week and you should really notice the difference rather quickly.
Clear the Air
Clean air is increasingly hard to come by, but when you can you should make an effort to breathe it as often as possible. For your home, invest in an air purifier by all means but also make sure that the filters on your air conditioners are replaced regularly too.
Rather than spending a small fortune on allergy pills and simply steeling yourself to limp through the spring as best you can why not make this the year you get serious about allergy treatment? For example, did you know that chiropractic treatment can be very effective when it comes to clearing sinuses and preventing infections? Or that a course of acupuncture can not only help relieve allergies but also boost your immune system, so it’s better equipped to defend your body from allergens and their effects?
Don’t suffer this spring, get proactive about allergy treatment and then maybe you too can be full of the joys of spring for once, instead of dreading its arrival.
