Treating Fibromyalgia in Overland Park
The whole body tenderness and often intense pain that is associated with Fibromyalgia is confusing and frustrating for those living with it, but it can be just as confusing for the medical professionals trying to treat it. This is a hard to understand, hard to diagnose condition that is one of the most ‘mysterious’ diseases of all. Because of all the confusion that exists around the condition finding any relief at all can seem almost impossible. There are however treatments that are increasingly found to be effective, including chiropractic care and acupuncture.
What is Fibromyalgia?
This is a question that is still difficult for even the established medical community to answer definitively. Currently, Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is classified as a disorder that causes widespread pain throughout the joints, tendons and soft tissues all over the body. Secondary, but equally frustrating and debilitating symptoms can also include fatigue, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep disorders and cognitive issues.
Fibromyalgia is currently estimated to affect 3-5% of the US population and sufferers are predominantly women. Diagnosis is difficult as there is no specific test that can determine if a patient displaying some or all of these symptoms is actually a sufferer. Current accepted guidelines, however, allow for a diagnosis if a person has been dealing with these symptoms for more than three months and no other underlying medical cause can be found.
What Causes Fibromyalgia?
Again, this is a question that has no definitive answer. Researchers and other medical professionals currently think that any of the following may be contributing factors:
Previous physical trauma
Fibromyalgia and Chiropractic Care
All chiropractic treatments focus on overall health as well as the specific conditions they are being used to treat. Misalignments in the spine – known as subluxations – can hinder the function of the nervous system, leading to a number of different health conditions. Correction of these misalignments via chiropractic treatments can be very effective for those suffering from neck pain, back pain, headaches and much more, including fibromyalgia.
A number of recent studies have made the link between the effective management of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and chiropractic care. Pain, fatigue and the quality of sleep all show improvement in many cases, and for some their range of motion is also improved.
Acupuncture for Fibromyalgia
When typical treatments for fibromyalgia do not, acupuncture is often recommended. Acupuncture can produce great results when treating “pain” conditions, and fibromyalgia is no different. Specific points help bring pain relief, and others calm the nervous system. Combining chiropractic care and acupuncture has been found by many patients to be effective for fibromyalgia relief. At Nigus Chiropractic, we practice needle-less acupuncture, which is non-invasive and comfortable for every patient, especially those who are less than fond of needles.
